Modern automotive engineering is a branch of vehicle engineering which encompasses incorporates elements of mechanical, electrical, electronic, software and safety engineering as applied to the design, manufacture and operation of motorcycles, automobiles, buses and trucks and their respective engineering subsystems. Automotive engineers are involved in almost every aspect of designing cars and trucks, from the initial concepts right through to manufacturing them.  Broadly speaking, automotive engineers are differentiated into three main streams: product engineering, development engineering and manufacturing engineering.

  1. Product engineers design components/systems and test them, seeing that it meets all its requirements, performs as required, material meets desired durability and so on.
  2. Development engineers delve into the attributes of the automobile.
  3. Manufacturing engineers determine how to make it.

The automobile industry in India has witnessed a rapid growth over the last couple of decades and in recent years it has also captured the attention of the whole world with some innovative products. It includes manufacturing two-wheelers, passenger cars, trucks, tractors, defense vehicles and buses. It requires skilled and trained manpower with good technical knowledge. There are plenty of employment opportunities for qualified professionals and they can select a career in Automobile Industry, which can lead to a bright future.

Scope of Automobile Industry

According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the total automobile sales in the domestic market was reported to be 1114157 units in January 2010 , increasing by 44.9% while for the same period last year 7,68,698 units were reportedly sold. Car sales in January saw a growth of 32% as it was reported 145000 units in the first month of 2010. The data for car sales surprised the analysts as it beats the previous best of 133000 sales recorded in November 2009, according to the data released by SIAM. Today, India is well known as a potential emerging automobile market and jobs in the automobile industry are rising phenomenally. Several foreign companies have their investments in Indian automobile industry. India is the major three-wheeler market and two-wheeler manufacturer in the world. It is also the second largest manufacturer of tractors. India is a home to many Indian and international automobile companies.

Job Opportunities

Plenty of job opportunities are waiting for qualified Automobile engineers. Considering the wide scope of the Automobile sector, it is not surprising that more and more candidates are dreaming of developing a career in Automobile Industry. Now, with so many foreign automobile companies like Volkswagen, Audi, Renault etc. targeting India as a base for manufacturing cars, the scope for a career in Automobile Industry is rising rapidly.

As automobile industry is showing rapid growth in India, the country becomes a house to numerous well-established automobile companies. They offer excellent job opportunities to develop a career in Automobile Industry. Some of the popular car-producing companies that offer jobs in the automobile industry are Suzuki, Toyota, Tata, Fiat, Honda, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ford, Hyundai and Skoda. Manufacturing of two-wheelers is dominated by the companies TVS, Bajaj Auto, LML, Kinetic, Yamaha and Hero Honda. Tractors are manufactured by the popular companies like Escorts, L&T, Mahindra & Mahindra, Punjab Tractors, John-Deere, New Holland and ITL-Renault.

Automobile engineering projects can range from developing alternate fuel vehicles, developing engines with a lower environmental pollution, designing newer technologies in vehicle designs etc.


Automobile Engineering is one of the core engineering departments of Amal Jyothi College of Engineering. This department offers a 4-year B.Tech program in Automobile Engineering under the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. The annual intake capacity is 60. The objective of this undergraduate program is to prepare technically competent world class Automobile engineers for the industry and academia. Some of the important subjects taught during the course are Auto chassis, Automobile Transmission, Auto power plant, Advanced IC Engines, Auto Electrical & Electronics, Vehicle Dynamics, Fuels & Combustion, Engine & Drive line Design, Vehicle Transport Management, Automobile Engineering Drawing in addition to Mechanical Engineering subjects like Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulics Machinery, Metallurgy & Material Science, Thermodynamics, Manufacturing Process, Thermal Engineering, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, CAD, Machine Drawing etc. Students undergo practical sessions in 11 labs during the program and get a chance to undergo short term training in related industries.

Safe driving today requires a higher level of confidence, competence and maturity, given the poor traffic planning, increasing number of vehicles, lack of professionalism in driving and untrained drivers on road.
