Learnings from Industrial Visit

  • HMT Limited, formerly Hindustan Machine Tools Limited, is a state-owned manufacturing company under the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in India.
  • HMT Founded in 1953, with state-of-art technology as its key strength acquired from world leaders in machine tools, offers a wide array of high technology machine tools solutions to cater every manufacturing requirement.
  • HMT ‘s wide marketing network & six manufacturing units spread across the country meets the highest customer expectations.
  • The machine tool unit at Kalamasery has a captive foundry of capacity 2500 MT per annum, Size of Grey Cast Iron casting up to 9.5 MT & S.G. Iron up to 2 MT
  • The unit has an In-house heat treatment plant facility with an efficient online production monitoring and material management system.
  • Thus, the machine tool unit applies engineering at its best and is one of the leading foundry units in kerala.

Learnings from Industrial Visit

  • Practical Ore separation process of illemenite and how Rutile is obtained through different mineral dressing process are seen
  • Separation Uranium oxide and the way how it is stored underground to minimise its radiation effect
  • Separation of lead oxide and methods that are followed to minimise its effect on drinking water in the surrounding area in Kollam District
  • Metallurgical problems faced during the proccess are clearly understood and profound explanation is given by experienced engineers.
  • Safety Issues are explained to students

Learnings from Industrial Visit

  • Steel and Industrial Forgings Limited (SIFL) is a Government of Kerala undertaking commenced commercial production in 1986 and gradually forged ahead to become a name to reckon with.
  • Surface conditioning through shot blasting/grinding
  • Calibration of electrical furnaces
  • Destructive test including tensile, jominy and impact testing, wet analysis, carbon-sulphur determination, insitu metallography(where microstructure can be observed without destroying the job) and non-destructive tests using Spectrometer, Microscope, Magnaflux crack detection, Die Penetrant,Ultrasonic flaw detection etc.
  • Batch furnaces, both oil fired & electrical, continuous electrical heating furnaces etc. to carry out annealing, normalising, hardening, tempering, iso-thermal annealing, solution treatment and other operations.

  • Sesa Sterlite, a Vedanta Group company is one of the world’s largest global diversified natural resource majors, with operations across zinc-lead-silver, oil & gas, iron ore, copper, aluminium and commercial power.
  • Sesa Sterlite is largest private sector exporter of iron ore in India which has the seventh largest iron ore reserves in the world.
  • Sesa Sterlite is the largest aluminium producer in India.
